Superstitions in Gambling

Almost every gambler has his or her own special superstitions or tricks to attract the attention of Lady Luck. Some blow on dice before rolling them. Others try to figure out what games are the hottest at the moment so they can ride the table's luck. Whatever the superstition, the concept of luck plays a huge part in the pastime, so it's worth exploring in depth.

Odds versus Luck

While there are certainly some ways to improve a player's performance in certain games, for the most part, who wins or loses is a matter of luck. Every game has its own special odds that determine the payout and cost of each type of bet. The bigger the risk and more unlikely the chance to win, the bigger the payout is. Smart players will attempt to play the odds, finding the best combination of low risk and high payout, but for the most part, players have to rely on a healthy dose of luck to pull them through casino games.

The Myth of Superstition

Many of the superstitions are grounded in some truth. For instance, some players will insist that sitting at the first position at the blackjack table is always bad luck. The only benefit that players get from sitting in another position is they get to see what cards have already been burned in the game, allowing them to make a slightly more educated bet. Lucky numbers in roulette are often revealed to be the result of a bias in the roulette wheel.

Since luck plays such a huge part in how and when players win at gambling, it's not surprising that many common superstitions have held sway. However, in the end, no one can influence luck.
