Safeguards in Gambling

Though online casinos and internet gambling are more popular than ever, they are not without their critics. Many countries still prohibit gambling in all of its forms, and even the United States has a number of restrictions placed on betting with non-governmental entities.

Reluctance to Change

Some of the most vocal critics of online gambling were the same ones who warned about the dangers of the internet itself. These critics are reluctant to put freedoms into the hands of the masses, certain that the people cannot handle the awesome responsibility of information and choice. They decried the dangers of cellphones, video games, and even television, certain that the spread of technology would lead to the downfall of society. Just as the technological innovations of the past have triumphed over their critics, so too will the spread of internet gambling and online entertainments.

Protecting People from Themselves

Critics express doubts about the ability of individuals to resist the temptations of gambling away all of their money. They want safeguards in place to protect people from themselves and from the unscrupulous internet casinos. Yet, there are already countless jurisdictional licensing boards that certify that online casinos are operating legally and ethically. Many of these casinos also have mechanisms in place to prevent individuals from abusing themselves or falling victim to gambling addictions.

While some safeguards and protections are appreciated and welcome in the online casino industry, prohibition of internet gambling is not the best solution. Critics should adjust to the spread of technology and look for ways to help that technology develop in the best way possible.
